We all want to buy the perfect gift for our friends and family when they are expecting.
There are so many things that your Mum-To-Be and newborn are going to need - so what gift should you give them?
My best advice is to think about whether the gift is special, essential or insightful! These are my three tips for finding a gift for your Mum-To-Be! Then scroll down to find out nine great gift ideas!
Make Your Gift Special
The gift will be special to your Mum-To-Be if it is special to you.
Taking your time and thinking about the mum you are buying for automatically makes the gift special.
Think about the colours and styles she likes, the activities and hobbies she undertakes and the way she likes to do things.
This can help you decide whether to get her a baby sun safe pack (because she loves going to the beach) or a baby carrier (because she likes hiking in her spare time).
Give an Essential Gift
There are some gifts my friends gave me that I feel were an essential gift.
One of my friends created a Medical Box for my newborn and she told me that "it has everything you are going to need for the first year of your baby's life". FANTASTIC!
When I received this gift a felt like my friend had my back, that she took out the guessing game for me and gave me exactly what I needed to help look after my babies medical and safety needs. Perfect gift!
Give An Insightful Gift
Let's give your mum a little insight by buying her something that she won't think of.
There are so many things I did not realise before having a baby, so I appreciated every little insight any of my friends and family gave me.
One of my friends created a Mum Pack, where she added many different things I would need when I went to the hospital! She also came around and helped me pack my hospital bag - bonus! We all needs friends like that!
Baby Shower Gift Ideas
One: Baby's First Medical and Care Box
Your first-time-mum will love a Baby's First Medical Box!
You can personalise this gift by buying your own container, designing a label to stick on the outside and fill it up with all the necessary things she and her baby will need.
Not only is this a thoughtful gift, it also takes the stress away from the first-time-mum who probably doesn't know what to put in a Baby's First Medical Box!
What you could include in a Baby's First Medical Box:
Hello Charlie are an eco friendly online store that pride themselves on selling you products that are good for mum and baby! If you are wanting to fill your Mother Gift Pack with eco products then definitely check out Hello Charlie!
Three: Clothes in all the sizes
Buying a set of clothing from each size from 0000 to Size 1 is a great way to make sure the baby has something for every age.
Keep in mind when the baby will be born and what age they will be when they wear each size.
No point in buying a beautiful, knitted cardigan in size 0000 if the baby will be born in Summer! The baby will not get to wear it!
Four: Baby Books - Board Books
Board Books and Black and white books are a perfect gift!
‘Black and white contrasting pictures maximise visual stimulation and appear to encourage infant development in the early months’. – Jennifer Gregor, Paediatric doctor, Melbourne, Australia (Mesmerised, 2018).
I read black and white books to my son since he was a newborn. Now at 10 months, he loves books and turns the pages himself. He engages with and investigates books more than any other toy!
Choosing a variety of board books to give as a baby shower gift, provides the Mum-To-Be with a variety of stories to read to their little one.
Five: Lactation Cookie Recipe and Ingredients
Finding a Lactation Cookie Recipe, buying a jar and filling it with the dry ingredients is the gift that says, "I am thinking about you during those tough first 6 weeks!"
My friend did this for me and I thought it was a fantastic gift!
Whether she actually needs the bikkies or not, doesn't matter, as it is a great treat for her to have when she is feeding every 3 hours and not sleeping much!
Your Mum-To-Be will need all the energy she can get!
So what are Lactation Cookies?
Boobie Bikkies help to increase a woman's milk supply.
Unfortunately, we are not all blessed with an abundant supply of milk and eating certain foods can help to increase our supply.
In fact, if you do not have a healthy diet this could contribute to why a mother is not producing enough milk (however, I am not a doctor and you should seek medical help if your milk supply is low or if you have any concerns).
There are three main ingredients in all lactation cookies: oats, brewers yeast and linseed meal (or flaxseed meal). Many recipes can be altered (to get the best tasting one!) but be sure to include these three ingredients.
There are many Lactation Cookie recipes online that you can choose from - just google! Here is one example.
If you would prefer to purchase already made cookies check out Pinky's Boobie Bikkies that are natural and organic, and you can buy online!
Pinky states that now they "know that everything you eat will be passed to your baby, Boobie Bikkies® are made from all natural and organic ingredients with no GM foods, chemical additives or pesticides passing through your milk."
Boobie Bikkies are sold in cartons of 10 bikkies. You can order gluten free bikkies and you can also add a free sample to your cart (just pay postage).
Six: Nappies, Wipes and Terry Towels
First check whether your friend is using disposable nappies or reusable nappies (disposable wipes or reusable wipes). Then choose what type of nappies, wipes and terry towels your friend will be interested in.
Order her some free samples online from Huggies (wipes and nappies) and Babylove and other brands. This will allow Mum-To-Be to test out which ones are best for her baby. Hello Charlie offers samples for $3.00 or less so that your Mum-To-Be can try out a few different brands. Hello Charlie only sells eco-friendly and safe products for babies.
Hello Charlie also has a lot of excellent information about many baby products. Your Mum-To-Be might be interested in some information about the products she is buying. You could print out a few Cheat Sheets for your Mum-To-Be.
You can also purchase a Newborn Pack for $16.95 from Hello Charlie which allows your Mum-To-Be to try out a few different Hello Charlie recommended brands (eco friendly).
Check out Hello Charlie to find your own Cheat Sheets!
Hello Charlie state: We "have a great range of eco nappies for your baby, and we've got lots of information to help you make the best choices for little bums. When it comes nappies to lower your environmental impact, there's a lot of information to wade through. That's why we help out with Cheat Sheets, and lots of great articles [including] ... preventing nappy rash, as well as reviews of lots of different products out there."
Seven: A Baby Carrier
The three main types of carriers:
The Pouch Carrier. This carrier is good for walking, hiking, going shopping and more. These carriers have straps that go over the shoulders (clipping together at the back) and around the waist. Many have 4 positions that you can put the child into: front (forward and backward facing), back, and side.
The Wrap is for a newborn and all you need is one long piece of material. This can make the baby feel safe and secure. The baby can be rocked to sleep, carried or used when doing chores!
The Ring Sling has a ring that is sewn onto one end of a long piece of material. The sling is light weight and the baby can be placed in the sling to sleep or be carried. You can also use this sling as a pram and nursing cover.
T-shirt Baby Carriers. This carrier is a pocket attached to a t-shirt where you can just slip the baby into the pocket.
This might be a gift that your Mum-To-Be would like to pick out herself depending on how she would like to use one.
Having said that, I ended up with three different options. I used both a Pouch Carrier (still do!) and a Wrap the most! I personally found a Ring Sling difficult to use (this may have been due to my own lack of co-ordination though!).
I used an Ergo Baby Carrier (which I absolutely love - and was a Baby Shower Gift from a wonderful friend of mine!) for walks, going into the shops and for days out with the family.
While I used a Wrap for when I was out and about and wanted to get my little one to sleep. My wrap was black so was perfect for making it dark while getting him to sleep.
Eight: A full-length bib
I am so in love with the bbox Smock Bib! It is one of the BEST bibs for feeding solids.
Why? Because this bib covers from the neck down to the knees.
I was getting tired of changing my son's clothing every meal time and thought that there must be a solution. And I found one!
The bbox smock has a unique waterproof design and is BPA, Phthalates and PVC free. The material is thin, and therefore, dries quickly. There are four different colours to choose from.
They are washable, extra long, waterproof, super-soft and breathable fabric and are free from BPA, PVC, Phthalates and Lead! These are a worthwhile investment as they will protect clothing from being stained!
