Sleep becomes the number one topic on your mind and on every mother's mind when they become a mum! Whether you are a first time mum or it's your fifth time heading to the hospital, sleep is important to you, your family and your baby!
As a new mum, I found myself researching, experimenting with different strategies and discussing the topic of sleep with every mum I knew. I read baby schedules, strategies, and information about baby's sleep.
I wanted the answer and I wanted it YESTERDAY!
Basically, I wanted to know how to help my little newborn settle easier, fall asleep and sleep for longer! I wanted to know whether I was doing everything wrong or everything right - and he was just a difficult sleeper.
From this journey of mine, I have found that there are Five Baby Sleep Steps we should all take BEFORE we have our baby - because I wish I had! However, if you have already had your baby and you want some help and to be empowered - then KEEP reading!
As I read articles, I realised that my baby needed enough sleep for his physical development, health and wellbeing. Even if he was a difficult sleeper, he still needed a certain amount of sleep.
Speaking generally about children's sleep, the Baby Sleep Academy (2011), based in Ireland, states that, "While children sleep a growth hormone called ‘somatotrophin’ is dispersed through the pituitary gland. This hormone is released throughout the day but approximately 80% of it is released soon after a child or adolescent is in the Non-REM stage of sleep. If a child does not reach their sleep requirements at night then this can subsequently inhibit their physical development."
Wow - that is heavy! But something we should be aware of.
It was not healthy for my baby to have prolonged awake times that were not appropriate for his age nor was it good for him to be going to bed too much.
So I needed to find some serious ways of understanding my baby and knowing how much sleep he actually needed for his wellbeing!
How do I find a solution when all babies have different sleep patterns, needs and wants - which makes it difficult to say that there is ONE solution for all babies!
This is why there are so many sleep consultants, sleep routines and sleep strategies out there.
Most of them probably work, just not necessarily on every baby and with every mum.
This is why I have come up with the 5 Baby Sleep Steps for you to understand how to get that perfect sleep and wake balance, settle your baby more easily and understand your baby better!
Throughout these Five Steps, I want you to feel empowered to make good decisions, equipped with great strategies and enriched with the knowledge and understanding that comes with these 5 Steps!
Because we are all different, we are all going to implement sleeping strategies differently and that is okay! It's all about finding what works for you, your baby and your family!
So keep reading to find out how to undertake the 5 Baby Sleep Steps Challenge! It is easy!
Please note I am NOT a sleep expert. I am a mum with personal experience. If you are struggling and need extra support, I encourage you to contact a professional such as your doctor, a sleep consultant or a sleep clinic.
