Hello Mumma and Mumma-to-BE!!!  So Maternity clothing - where to even start?

A little life is growing in side of you and you can feel your tummy growing.  Are you beginning to feel a little tight in your favourite jeans (are you unbuttoning after meals yet?).  If yes, I think it is definitely time that you get your Maternity Wardrobe organised!

Or perhaps, you have only just found out you are pregnant and you want to be prepared for your changing body!  I LOVE being prepared!  So let's get started!  I know where you should start because I have done it before, and have learned from my own mistakes!

I wish I had been more prepared for my first pregnancy and created an ultimate Maternity Wardrobe!  This would have been amazing to have been prepared for all my pregnancies and use each maternity item for longer than 9 months!

I have created a list of all the maternity items that you will find useful as your body changes and help you to stay comfortable and confident!  I have created this from what I have learned from my first pregnancy - my "wish I had" items and the items I LOVED during pregnancy.

Maternity Wardrobe Tips!

Love the Rouche

The ruffled rouching effect looks gorgeous on pregnant women and definitely on trend for 2019!

The stretchy, elastic clothing will stretch with you as your tummy grows, allowing you to wear the item throughout your whole pregnancy and post pregnancy.  Ideal for making the most of your maternity clothing purchase!

You can also wear these items post pregnancy!  As it is often suggested that you will be the size of around 20 weeks after you give birth.  So you will want to make sure you pack loose clothing and maternity clothing in your Hospital Bag!  If your rouching clothing are also breastfeeding friendly then you will get even more use out of these items!

Find the Stretchy

Stretch is so important!  You don't want to feel pressure on your stomach all day!  So when looking for maternity clothing check what the material is made out of and how the item is designed for comfort!

Consider the Pregnancy and Nursing Combo!

Not all maternity clothes are for breastfeeding and not all nursing clothes are belly friendly!  So you may end up needing to buy two sets of clothing for before and after birth.

If you want to avoid this, buy clothing that is both for pregnancy and for nursing.  The items will tell you which ones they are for!  So make sure you double check!

Look at the Length

I have personally bought maternity tops that I thought were long that soon barely covered the bottom of my belly.  During my pregnancies I wanted long tops so that I could wear maternity leggings underneath. I wanted my belly and my bottom covered!

So think about how long you want different items to be and how you want them to fit as your belly grows!
Pregnancy | Maternity Clothing | The Insightful Mum

Check if it is see-through!

The worst to happen would to bend over and the lovely elastic material is actually see-through!

Be Brave!

Be brave and wear some colours, patterns and florals!  Don't just get stuck in the blacks, greys and browns!  While these colours are great for mix and matching, having a bit of colour will brighten up your day and show off your pregnancy glow!

Wear the Right Size!

Maternity clothing is designed and made with you, the pregnant mumma, in mind.  So you don't need to buy a bigger size.  Most maternity clothing will fit you for your entire pregnancy at the size you are normally.

Many maternity brands will give sizing tips on their websites so be sure to check these out!

Think Long Term

It is important for you to budget your Maternity Wardrobe to what you can afford - but our advice is to think long term!  Consider three things:
  1. If you are planning to have more than one pregnancy then it would be wise to buy what you will need for all pregnancies.  You will get the most out of each item then.
  2. What maternity items will last, and therefore is cheap necessarily cheaper?
  3. What is going to fit you for the entire pregnancy?  If you purchase a t-shirt that is a few sizes bigger than your normal size but it doesn't fit you the entire pregnancy.  Then is it worth purchasing?  Perhaps it is better to buy maternity clothing specifically designed to grow with your changing body.  I found this to be true for me.

Don't sacrifice comfort during pregnancy!

You should feel comfortable during your pregnancies!

Maternity Clothing During Pregnancy

Here are my suggested maternity items that will help you to feel confident and comfortable throughout your entire pregnancy!

Tops, tees and t-shirts

What kind of tops and how many will depend on what you do each day.

Do you work full-time or part-time?

Do you work from home or are you in an office?

Are you active while you are working?

All these questions, and more, you should consider when thinking about what maternity tops you are going to get.  For example, if you work from home you could get mainly plain, comfortable tops and a couple dressy tops for going out with the girls or going on a hot date with hubby!

Here are some questions to consider:
  • Do you mainly wear skirts, trousers or shorts?  Therefore, what maternity tops will match these items.
  • Are you on a budget? Consider buying white, grey and black maternity tops so you can mix and match, and change your look with different bottoms and accessories.
  • Are you working? Divide your days into working tops and weekend tops!
  • How often will you be exercising each week?  The recommended regular exercise is at least 30 minutes of walking per day.  So you may want to invest in some maternity sports tops.

If you are not going to be wearing dresses then you will want to have a top for each day of the week - otherwise you will be undertaking a lot of washing!

Pat Pat have a huge selection of maternity tops that are for both pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Casual but stylish!
  • Short-sleeve Tee: A top you can wear to work, home or getting the groceries!  A white with black stripes maternity and breastfeeding top, and is 65% Cotton and 35% Polyester.
  • Casual Tee: This VERY casual tee comes in five different colour options!  This top would be perfect for being comfortable at home, doing chores, or hanging out with close friends!  You will definitely want some plain comfortable tees in your wardrobe!

Dressy but comfortable!
  • Trendy Maternity Tee: A top with a pleated design which will look gorgeous on you whether you are pregnant or have a newborn in your arms!  You can dress this top up or down depending on your event!
  • Elegant 3/4 Sleeve Maternity Tee: The pleated design is very popular and looks amazing on pregnant women.  So you will want to take a look at this one too!

The Singlets

You will want between 5 and 7 singlets for pregnancy and then for breastfeeding. With milk leaking and your baby's chuck ups, you will be changing your singlets regularly!  Let's face it, all of your clothes and baby's clothes will be getting regular washes!

You can buy singlets that are specific for a growing belly, ones that are for breastfeeding and ones that are for both!

Hello Charlie have a selection of maternity and breastfeeding items - including the Modibodi Maternity Singlet in Black.  And best part is, it is LEAK PROOF!

The Modibodi has a state of the art patented fibre technology, replaces the need for all nursing pads and is stain resistant and breathable!  You can wear this singlet during pregnancy and then during breastfeeding!

"Modibodi Maternity Singlet is specially designed to be worn during breastfeeding. It uses Patented Modifier Technology™ in the bra cups that works for all sized milk leaks. The material is moisture wicking, antibacterial, stain resistant, waterproof, breathable and super absorbent! ... The material is super soft bamboo jersey on the outer, and it looks and fits like a regular breastfeeding bra.

Why we love Modibodi Maternity Singlet Black Leak Proof:
  • Waterproof
  • Super absorbent
  • Moisture wicking
  • Antibacterial
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Super soft high quality fabric
  • Australian owned and designed"
Hello Charlie

Leggings

You will want at least two pairs of leggings - more in winter!  They are one of the most comfortable items to wear while your belly continues to grow!  Most leggings are made with stretchy material that cover your belly - giving you a little bit of support around your tummy!

There are so many different styles of leggings for you to choose from!  I have collected a few examples for you to check out from Pat Pat, QueenBee and Amazon Australia!

Underwear

Your belly will be growing and you will be thinking about your outfits - but have you thought about the comforts of a maternity bra and pants?

The normal size of your breasts is going to change and your belly will be growing up under your breasts.  So investing in a couple new maternity bras that provide you with the support you need for during the day and for the night!  Your breasts are going through a lot of changes and you will want to keep them well supported!

Investing in maternity pants will also give you that added comfort!  The less restriction and tightness around the tummy the better!

Amazon Australia

Amazon Australia have a huge selection of maternity bras and pants!

I have a few different bra brands to wear during pregnancy and one of the brands I love is bonds!

Amazon have the Bonds Maternity Wirefree Bra for only $23.07+

This Maternity Bra has removable foam cup inserts (allowing for more room) and a hidden sling for breastfeeding (which was great).  The bra stretches just above the tummy bump allowing for your natural pregnancy changes.

Pat Pat.

Pat Pat have a selection of intimates for maternity wear.

This Solid Lace Bra is just one of the ones that they offer.

Pajamas!

You want to be comfortable when you are sleeping!  I consider this to be a MUST - unless you have something really big already!

You will want to have the best mattress, the best pregnancy pillow and the best sleepwear for you and your growing belly!  There is nothing like putting on your maternity pajamas at night and feeling amazing!

Pat Pat.

Pat Pat have a Maternity and Nursing Pajama Set!  Which would be great to use during and after pregnancy!  And even as an item you can put in your Hospital Bag and have as your Labour Outfit.

The Comfort Outfit

Choose a comfortable outfit!  Whether that is track pants, a dress or shorts.  Whatever it is, it should be comfortable for the season you are in and for your growing size.

Get something that will allow you to rest on the couch and watch a movie!

The Black Dress

Having a black dress is great during pregnancy!

For those special events like baby showers, work dinners and weddings, you can wear your black dress and feel both comfortable and stylish!  Black dresses allow you to easily dress up or down for your special occasions or a night out.

Esther & Co

This flattering shape dress has the ability to work as BOTH a maternity and nursing dress.  The fabric is soft and stretchy, and has a lovely rouching allowing your belly to grow.  The material is a breathable bamboo knit fabric!
