Change tables | Finding the best fit for you and your baby
How to find the Ideal Change Table for you and your growing family!
Last Update: March 17, 2019
At times, I found searching for baby products to be overwhelming yet at the same time to be an exciting adventure! So many emotions surging - we were going to have a baby!
My husband and I stepped into our local baby shop at just over 12 weeks (the waiting period is over - it is safe to be seen in one!) and boy were we mentally soaked with a tremendous amount of options to choose from.
Here I was needing to choose the perfect change table, pram, cot and more, all the while I was feeling light-headed, sick and had a constant headache (which didn't go away until my 14th week of pregnancy!).
It is safe to say we visited our local baby shop so much they probably knew us by name. We did research and looked at so many different options my head would have hurt even if I wasn't pregnant!
Should you buy a Change Table?
YES! Buying a change table ensures you have a safe and practical way to change your baby's nappies easily.
Believe it or not, but you will be changing your newborns nappy roughly 10 to 12 times a day - or MORE! Having a change table at the right height protects your body and makes it safer for you! Remember you will have just had a baby, so thinking about you and your body is important.
Many good change tables include storage space for you to access nappies, clothes and other items easily. Walking away from your baby is not an option while changing your baby - for MANY reasons!
Having a change table helps you to be organised and allows you to save time by having everything in its place.
Change tables can have many uses after your child has grown out of the changing stage. Including converting to a chest of drawers once they are beyond their baby years.

How to find the Ideal Baby Change Table
Updated Last March 17, 2019
There are so many different options for change tables ranging in price and what is included.
You can get change tables that are moveable, change tables that can be used as kids drawers after the baby stage, change tables that have a bath included and change tables that are on portable cots.
The cost of a change table can be less than AUS$50.00 to thousands.
So what is the best fit for you?
I have seven areas that you should consider when purchasing the perfect change table for you and your growing family!
What Should You look for when buying a
baby change table?
The Size of the Change Table
In this case size matters! You should consider how much room you have in your baby room or in the space you are choosing to put the change table.
Also, what else are you going to be putting in the space.
Check the length (along the wall), the depth (how far it will stick out) and the height (is the height safe for you and your back).
Moveable or Stationary?
Change Table in use in my Baby's Room!
Are you wanting the change table to be easily moved? Or are you wanting it to stay in the one place.
If it is moveable you can have it out in the common room, in your bedroom or in the baby room. All you have to do is simply roll the change table out.
Otherwise, would you prefer something more solid and not able to move. As your child can move about (crawling and then walking!) perhaps you don't want them to be able to move the change table about. They will possibly be in nappies for a while!
"Some kids are ready to start at as young as 18 months old, while others aren't ready until they're 3 or 4. Once he shows interest in using the toilet and he's able to push his pants and diaper down on his own, he's probably ready to start the process. You can provide a small potty, read books about using the toilet, help him pick out underwear and give him reminders about using the potty after meals."
Combinations - what do you want included?
Do you want drawers, open shelves or a bath with your change table?
Having drawers means you can out everything at arms reach including clothing, diapers, bibs and more. You can put everything in the drawer - messy or tidy - and it won't be seen.
Having open shelves you can also have everything at arms reach, however you can see everything!
Having a bath and change table combo means that you can give your newborn a bath at a good height. Just after having a baby you really don't want to be bending over giving your newborn a wash. So a bath-change table combo is great for giving baths just simply because of the height. You can easily wheel it into the bathroom for your newborn's bath then wheel it out for a change.
A few things to consider are:
the bath will be full when you take your newborn out so you won't be able to change them on it after a bath (you want to change them quickly so they don't get cold).
You can't have anything under the bath that you don't want to get wet (just in case!).
You will want to clean and dry the bath before putting the change table back on for use.
We borrowed a bath with a stand while our son was a newborn. Once he was older we went to a normal bath and shower. We gave the bath back and therefore didn't need to store it anymore! Worked well as we had our change table ready to change our son after each bath.
What is the Storage like in the Change Table?
How much storage do you have? For me, I never seem to have enough! I like things put away in their place and everything looking neat and tidy. Anyone else with me?
So, where are you going to put the nappies, creams, face washers, clothing, terry towels and so on? Also, do you want all the changing essentials close by and at an arms reach? Then consider how much storage the each change table gives you and your newborn/baby/toddler.
Another thing to consider is can you add storage baskets or containers? What size can you add? Will each size nappy fit in the storage baskets you pick?
What is the Quality?
Consider the quality of the change table that you are buying - is it sturdy? Also, depending on how long you are wanting it to last for may influence how important quality is.
Who are you buying from? Are you wanting to buy from an Australian run store, an Australian Made product or would you prefer imported goods?
Brand New verses Second-hand
Something to consider is whether you want to buy a change table that is brand new that has never been used or one that has been pre-loved. Pre-loved ones can be in excellent condition - you just need to be prepared to put in the time to find the bargain!
What is YOUR Budget?
We all need to decide whether we can afford something! Just because we want something doesn't mean we HAVE to have it!
Don't take a loan or your credit card to pay for items you really can't afford - instead be realistic and pay for things you can afford! You will be going to just one income if you haven't already and you should be thinking of the future.
